Phish, a multi-platinum improvisational fusion band was formed in 1983 at the University of Vermont. Bassist Mike Gordon and drummer Jon Fishman, are the Jewish half of the band. The band has been known to include such Jewish classics as Yerushalayim Shel Zahav and Avinu Malkeinu in its repertoire, although in its own unique musical style.
Best known for their classics Junta, and A Live One, reached platinum status. According to bassist Mike Gordon "Music, fills many of the holes that religion leaves open. The philosophical feeling behind religion, a religious upbringing, and even the notion of praying to God is very abstract. This transfers directly to my relationship with music. While you cannot necessarily touch music, you can feel it and it is something to believe in."
Phish retired in 2004, but intends to do a reunion tour sometime in 2009.
