Paula Julie Abdul, born in June of 1962, a Grammy Award winner, Laker Cheerleader, and American Idol judge is Jewish. Abdul's father, Harry was born in Syria and raised in Brazil emigrated to the US. Abdul's mom Lorraine, a former concert painist was born in Canada. Abdul and her sister Wendy were raised in the San Fernando Valley in California.
Abdul rose from College at Cal State Northridge to Laker Girl, to sought after choreographer, to #1 singer. In fact Abdul had six #1 singles on the Billboard charts from the late 1980's to the early 1990's. Currently Abdul is entering her 8th season as a judge on the popular American Idol TV show.
Abdul was interviewed about being her relationship with Judaism -- "My father is a Syrian Jew whose family immigrated to Brazil. My mother is Canadian with Jewish roots. My dream is to come to Israel for a real holiday."
In November 2006, Israeli tourism minister, Isaac Herzog invited her to Israel, to which Abdul responded with a hug, adding, "I will come; you have helped me make my dream come true."
